Drafting

As general-purpose farm dogs the ancestors of the Bernese Mountain Dog were called upon to guard the farm, drive livestock and to haul loads around the farm or from farm to market [1] [2].

Today, the tradition continues as Bernese Mountain Dogs display their drafting heritage in parades and community affairs. Though it is difficult to find a place in the modern world where a dog is the most efficient way to move a load, the joy of working with your dog makes it easy to find a reason to hitch up your dogs.

One of the most engaging of all performance events is the draft test or draft match, where dedicated Bernese Mountain Dog owners put these powerful and well-trained animals through a course of exacting maneuvers as listed in the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America's Draft Regulations.

Everyone should attend at least one draft match or draft test. Please visit the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America's draft calendar, and check our calendar for local events.
